Ready, Set, Go!: 5 Types of Students During the Intramurals

Intramurals—the time of year when New Lifers unite to test their abilities, teamwork, and, above all, competitive spirit on the court. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a student unsure how to hold a racket, this event holds a special place for you. In fact, everyone brings something unique to the table, and the way these distinct personalities shine through is what spices things up and makes the games worth watching. They revive the spirit of friendly rivalry, fueled by dedication, passion, and good humor. You’ll spot these different personalities on and off the field—each bringing their own vibrant energy that enhances the “intrams” experience:

The Overachiever

Whether the game is just a friendly match or a fierce competition, this student plays as if competing in the Olympics. The Overachievers aren't just in it to win it; to them, each game becomes an opportunity to assert their dominance in the court. They approach every match with a relentless “must-win” mindset, acting like their whole lives are on the line. They can commonly be found sprinting across the courts and dripping with sweat, pushing with their 110% effort.

The Coach

Although not officially the team’s coach, this student might as well be. You’ll constantly see the Coaches preparing plans, giving advice, and shouting directions from the sidelines as if they were handling a national team. In their minds, a victory is not just a goal, but an absolute necessity. No matter what it takes, the Coaches are there to guide, or rather, lead the team to victory.

The Walking Injury

Who’s that kid limping like he just survived a marathon? Whether it’s pulling through a mysterious ankle sprain or hobbling due to a broken back from tying their shoelaces, the Walking Injuries somehow always have a medical update to share. Yet, their dedication is unmatched—they show up to every game with an ice pack in hand and a determined grin on their faces. Even after taking a brutal spike to the shoulder, they shrug it off, diving for the next ball like it's the last point of a championship. Pain is truly no match for their commitment!

The Enthusiastic Newbie

Even if these students may not have the best athletic skills, our Enthusiastic Newbies constantly give it their all despite being uncertain about what they’re doing. They throw themselves in every match with pure chaos and joy, figuring things out along the way. After all, they’re just excited to make it past tryouts and play alongside their friends, no matter how much they contribute (or not) to their batch’s overall success. They may be unsure of the rules, but their effort to learn and adapt makes them truly belong to the team.

The “I’m Just Here for the Break” Person

This student isn’t too concerned about the game's outcome—they’re just glad to be out of class. Intrams? Sounds like the perfect excuse to take a break from a lecture! You’ll spot these for-the-break people cheering for their friends from the bleachers, phones in hands, and taking videos for future blackmail. For them, the thrill of competition is secondary to the chance to unwind. Each game is less about the score and more about the memories being made, one embarrassing photo at a time.

In the end, regardless of skill or enthusiasm level, intramurals are about much more than winning or losing. It displays a diverse array of personalities, reminding us that teamwork, fun, and dedication are the elements that truly matter. So, whether you’re the player stepping onto the field to win or you’re the teammate losing your voice, shouting cheers and chants from the sidelines, let the games go on!
