MGCNLCA Robotics Varsity Bags Multiple Awards at World Robotics Games
The MGCNLCA Robotics Varsity team garnered several awards at the World Robotics Games (WRG) held last November 16 to 18 at the National Taiwan Science Education Center in Taipei.
Competing against different schools and countries, delegates were tasked to create innovative robots in line with the theme “Environmental, Social, Corporate Governance.”
In the Incredible Machines category, Matthew Ryan Chong of Patmos, Samara Fionna Ang of Berea, and Ember Prinze Wong of Galilee won silver. Skylar Freya Ang from Jordan, Michael Ryan Chong of Jericho, and Angel Ken Young from UP Integrated School (UPIS) bagged bronze medals in the same category.
Wong dominated the Sumobot Basic Junior category, securing the champion title.
Siblings Samara and Skylar Ang seized the gold in the Junior Innovation category, while Wong and Michael Ryan Chong of Galilee bagged silver. The Ang siblings also won copper in Junior IBeam Line Tracing.
Samara admitted that she was thrilled to get a gold, as they had been working on their robot for months, under the tutelage of their varsity coach, Elmer Alforque. “I would like to thank Coach Alforque for his dedication and patience in helping us all throughout the process. Without his guidance, none of this would have been possible,” she said.
In the Senior Innovation category, Matthew Chong and UPIS’s Young obtained gold. Along with his younger brother Michael, Matthew also won copper in Ball Fighting.
Matthew acknowledged that their performance was better than last year. “We join competitions not just to win as that's just the side quest. [We join] to learn and improve our skills in robotics,” he expressed.
The WRG has been held annually since 2015, with different host countries each year. This year’s event in Taiwan was the first onsite WRG since the pandemic. Countries that participated in the event were Malasiya, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Awards are presented in the following order: champion, gold, silver, bronze, and copper.
