MGCNL Athletes Honor Seniors and Coaches at First-Ever Varsity Night
In celebration of the successful season of MGCNL’s different sports teams in their respective tournaments, Batch 20 launched the school’s first-ever Varsity Night in the school gymnasium last May 18.
Zion STEM students Gian Lucas Tan and Wesley Jonn Co hosted the evening, with the special event being dedicated to sending off senior varsity players and expressing gratitude to their coaches.
The night began with each varsity team showcasing their teamwork by forming shapes with paper string without looking and creating a flag representing their respective varsity. Team “Swess,” made up of the combined varsities of swimming and chess, came up with the best flag, outshining the competition.
During dinner, Patmos student Peach Oribelle Diño led the volleyball team in giving a heartfelt farewell toast to their long-time coach, Thelma Rojas, who laid the foundation of the school’s volleyball program. Rojas will be retiring after 15 years as head coach of the volleyball team.
The night concluded with former varsity captains passing the torch to their successors. Senior athletes reflected on their experiences and shared valuable lessons with the younger players, fostering a sense of continuity and inspiration.
Chess varsity rookie Joshua Lim of batch Patmos said, “They are almost like older brothers to me and it’s like I’m losing a part of my family. They are a big inspiration to me in tournaments because they are always number one and motivate me to push myself further.”
The event was such a resounding success that School Director Helen Villanueva expressed her desire to continue the Varsity Night tradition. She also wants to ensure that the hanging of banners commemorating each PCYAA or Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association season becomes a yearly practice.
