MGCNL Clinches 4-Peat Championship in PCYAA 18U Volleyball Tournament
The MGCNLCA volleyball team clinched the championship with a double-perfect season, not losing any game or set, to uphold their four-year Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association (PCYAA) win streak. The team has won every championship since they started competing in PCYAA’s women’s volleyball.
The New Lifers held off Jubilee Christian Academy (JCA) in a best-of-three games final, finishing game two, 25-21, 27-25, 25-14, in their home court, and nabbed game one with a score of 25-11, 25-23, 25-16 at the JCA gym on March 16.
Captain ball Angeline Tan anchored the team to victory in both games with her acing service and consistently strong spikes, holding the team together despite JCA’s tight defense.
“We are so happy to be able to make it this far and continue the legacy our seniors left behind last season. Now that it is my last year playing for the MGCNLCA volleyball team, I am very blessed to have concluded my journey with a good ending,” commented Tan as she reflected on the joy every single one of the girls felt at the conclusion of the tournament.
The second game, which was the final one of this 11th season, kept both teams on their toes–even more so in the first two sets, where neither team gained significant point advantages.
The first set began with errors on both sides of the court, keeping the score largely even throughout a good chunk of the match. The New Lifers however gained more control of the court, through their spikes, foiling JCA in their attempts to take the set.
The match as a whole gained momentum in the second set, as seen in the elevation of MGCNL’s spikes and blocks, as well as their saving receives. JCA’s defense only solidified, bringing the set to a deuce, but the accuracy of the New Lifers’ offense gave them the set at 27-25.
The team wrapped up the game with a score of 25-14 in the third set, ending with the largest lead they took for the match. The New Lifers found and attacked the defensive holes of JCA, particularly their corners, earning them the tournament.
“I am especially proud of the connection we were able to build with one another throughout the training sessions and games, which definitely plays a big part in our sport,” concluded Tan. “This allowed us to play better than we practiced, especially during the finals. Overall, I am very satisfied with the 101% effort exerted by each player in today’s game.”
