MGCNL Mathletes Triumph in International Competitions
Three New Lifers displayed their extraordinary skills in mathematics as they won awards in international competitions.
Recently-graduated MGCNL alumnus Rickson Caleb Y. Tan garnered bronze in his participation as part of the Philippine Team in the 64th International Math Olympiad (IMO) held in Chiba, Japan from July 02-13, 2023.
This marks Tan’s second time to join this prestigious competition after receiving an honorable mention last year in the 63rd IMO in Oslo, Norway. The rest of the Philippine team also managed to bag either a silver or bronze medal in this year’s IMO.
Former New Lifer Filbert Ephraim Wu joined Tan as part of the Philippine IMO delegation, along with Jerome Austin Te, Raphael Dylan Dalida, Mohammad Nur Casib and Alvann Walter Paredes Dy.
First held in Romania in 1959, the IMO is the most prestigious pre-university mathematics olympiad, known for its high level of difficulty. It challenges the student contestants in advanced levels and topics of mathematics that are not usually taught in the normal curriculum. This competition comprises a total of six questions done across two days, each of four and a half hours.
Currently, about forty countries have already hosted the IMO competition and over one hundred countries have taken part in this event.
Meanwhile, incoming Grade 4 student Nathan Y. Gohoc and incoming grade 9 student Aaron Russel S. Kho won silver and bronze awards, respectively, in the Final Round of the Mathematics Without Borders (MWB) 2023. While the other participating countries competed face-to-face in Bulgaria, participants from the Philippines did it online last July 1.
The MWB competition consists of three preliminary rounds (autumn, winter, and spring) and a Final Round. Each of the preliminary rounds has 20 open-ended questions with an allotted time of 60 minutes. These rounds serve as the basis on who moves on. The Final Round is further separated into individual and team contests.
The Philippine delegation to the MWB managed to earn a total of forty-two awards. Among those were 13 bronze, 12 silver, 4 gold, 12 Overall Championship Awards, and 1 Math Star Award.
