MGCNLCA Goes Solar
In a bid for a more sustainable future and reducing its carbon footprint, MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) had solar panels installed on the school’s rooftop last May.
The installation was suggested by the school board to address MGCNLCA’s increasing electricity bill due to the increased use of electricity in the school.
“More classrooms and rooms are being used with air conditioning,” stated General Services Head Ralph Anog.
Anog attributed the recent increase in the school’s electricity bill to the reshaped layout of the fifth floor and the entry of a large batch of grade seven students, in addition to the already rising usage of air conditioners in the classrooms and in the gym due to more activities.
“The school recognized the need for sustainable energy solutions, so the board decided to implement the usage of solar panels for MGCNL,” said Anog. “Solar panels were chosen not only to reduce the school’s electricity costs but also to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability. This initiative aligns with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and setting a positive example for our students in environmental stewardship.”
Solar panels can help offset some of the electricity usage incurred during school hours. By generating its own electricity, MGCNLCA can lower its monthly electricity bills. Currently, the 188 solar panels installed on MGCNLCA’s roof have the capacity to hold up to 100 kWh worth of electricity, which is enough to offset around twenty-five percent of the school’s electricity bill. The actual electricity generated would depend on the available sunlight.
“In the process of gathering data… based on our talks with the supplier, theoretically, it’s around twenty-five percent [of all the electricity used in the school],” remarked Anog.
However, the effectiveness of the solar panels is largely dependent on the present weather conditions, with rain significantly hampering energy output.
Solar power is a clean and renewable energy source with significant environmental benefits, as its use helps reduce our carbon footprint. By replacing fossil fuels with solar energy, we can significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions, which can help mitigate climate change. With this step in the right direction, we can surely expect more advancements in sustainability for MGCNLCA in the future.
