Anti-Valentine’s Day: How to Get Through the Month of Lovey Dovey

Well, here we go again. The annual bombardment of heart designs and the ever-so-subtle display of affection between couples has commenced. However, with all the hype that revolves around being cuffed by the time Valentine’s Day arrives, the ones who are delightfully unattached (I hope!) or just not in the mood for the sappy festivities are left to witness the shenanigans in society. So, what better way to celebrate being alone than by turning a blind eye towards the ones who are excitedly involved? (Besides, this practically shows growth from the past if you came from reading the guide to heartbreak.) Channel the anti-romantic in you on Valentine’s Day by ticking off items in this list of things to do or remember to keep your sanity somewhat intact.

1. Freedom!

Look at it this way, you could say “more for me” in a bragging response to everything. No more sharing of food, additional spending made, and uneasiness when expanding your social circle. Say “hello” to the abundance of free time you have, not having to use your remaining brain cells to plan for and think about another human being.

2. Love Stinks Playlist

Imagine jamming to the ultimate playlist that perfectly depicts your lovely sentiments about your loveless predicament. Search your music collection for the most exquisite breakup anthems, anti-love ballads, and scornful lyrics about independence and empowerment as an individual. As the soundtrack plays, you will find yourself bobbing your head along and even disturbing your neighbors as you belt out the lyrics.

3. Netflix and No Chill

Indulge yourself in films that are so cheesy that they trigger your lactose intolerance. Ludicrous miscommunications, absurd love triangles, and enough dramatic pauses for a Shakespearean tragedy—what more could you ask for? Don't forget to acquire a mountain of snacks and prepare your eye sockets for the intense eye-rolling.

4. You are the Star

Be the main character and make it your entire personality. You don't need to wait for somebody else to sweep you off your feet or lavish you with romantic gestures. Treat yourself knowing that a date isn't mandatory to make an experience memorable—it's already fantastic since you're the one savoring it.

Truly, Valentine’s Day is not for the weak. As we wade through the sea of bouquets and cliché romances, let us do so with all the snark and flair we can muster. Here's to us— our resilience in the face of societal norms, our individuality radiating magnificently, and the opportunities that await us in life.
