Grade 9 Students Hold Cooking and Selling Project
Grade 9 Damascus students got a taste of both the culinary and business worlds as they prepared and sold their own food last December 5 and 7.
Held at the MGCNL 4th floor cafeteria, the activity was a collaboration between the subjects Home Economics (HE) and Consumers Math (ConMath), headed by HE teacher Daniel Matthew Espaldon with the help of ConMath teacher Ptr. Francis Ang.
For two days, the Damascus students were given an opportunity to sell their products to the entire school community.
On the first day, Burgers ‘n’ Bytes of Damascus B sold bacon burgers and fries, while Mojo Dojo Casa House of Damascus D sold mojos and quesadillas. Meanwhile, on the second day, Damascus A’s Sliderman sold beef sliders, fries and milkshakes while KariKari Yoi of Damascus C sold Japanese food such as ebi tempura and kani tempura.
“The selling was a unique experience where I learned the importance of proper time management, organization, and responsibility,” commented Mikaela Denise Co of Damascus A.
Damascus D’s Sofie Jada Santiago said that the most significant lesson she learned was organization to help keep things in order.
Damascus C’s Adrian Zachary Liong agreed, “The most important lesson we learned while selling was the importance of thorough planning. There has to be plans and systems to have an organized and successful selling or else things will be messy and result in many consequences.”
Meanwhile, Jairus Jacob Lee of Damascus B stated that throughout planning, setting up, and selling, he learned the value of being detailed in accomplishing tasks to prevent future complications.
Ang expressed, “I’m happy with what I saw. I saw realistic problems and I saw the struggles. Actually, it’s positive for me to see [the students] struggling because [that is] the reality. But what I saw was expected because [they] put their heart into what [they’re] doing. All in all, I’m very happy with what I saw.”
“It was frightening and worrying because I didn’t know what would happen or what to expect. But by the grace of God, we had a successful outcome.” reflected Espaldon.
