Table Tennis Team Brings Home Gold and Silver in PCYAA Season 11
The MGCNLCA Table Tennis team clinched the championship title in the 14U Girls Division and settled for silver in the 18U Boys Division last March 16 at St. Stephens High School (SSHS) for Season 11 of the Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association (PCYAA).
After a long and hard-fought tournament, the New Lifers walked out with a second-place finish overall and beat two other schools, Philippine Cultural College (PCC) and Uno High School (UNO). SSHS narrowly claimed the first-place title over MGCNL.
The New Lifers in the 14U Boys Division were the first to secure places in the competition with the team composed of Raphael Co, Nigel Ang, Jeremiah Key, Theodore Mancilla, and Brendan Mancilla. They played a total of nine games and played their best against the other schools.
In the 14U Girls Division, Rhian Hang and Reese Hang competed in the Singles Division, while Samantha Young, Moira Cordova, and Uzziel Cawaon took turns playing in the Doubles Division. After dominating all the games against SSHS and UNO, the girls ultimately secured the championship title.
The 14U girls also competed in the 18U division and emerged 4th place. Reese Hang teamed up with Gwynneth Recato Dy, Abbie Gail Ang, Kyra Ang, Anica So, and Phoebe Ramos to finish the season with some wins against SSHS and PCC.
The last division was the highly competitive 18U boys’ team event which was composed of teams from SSHS, MGCNL, UNO, and PCC.
This division saw numerous deciding matches and hard-fought wins, as the New Lifers brought home silver. Caden Ching and Lance Ngo fought for the Singles Division, while Vaughn Cawaon, Jayden Chan, and Nathan Hao, represented the school in the Doubles Division.
Assistant Coach Janelle Gillego noted that while the team did win some categories, "whatever the result of this competition shows what happens in training, so if everyone wants to get better results, the team needs to train more consistently and not waste time when training starts."
Overall, this season’s PCYAA Table Tennis Tournament ended with satisfying results and hard-fought victories. The team aims to go for gold in all divisions in the succeeding seasons and will continue training to bring glory to God and the school.
