Batch Zion Teaches E-Safety in Returning Media Symposium

Batch Zion enlightened Grade 4 Gethsemane students about online safety through a media symposium entitled “Staying E-Safe: A Media Symposium on Digital Safety” held at the school auditorium last December 15.

Hosted by Elliot Albano from Zion STEM and Charlize Chua from Zion ABM, the symposium presented seven engaging videos prepared by the Zion students as part of their Media Information and Literacy  (MIL) class.

In her opening remarks, MIL teacher Richelle Kho stressed the importance of educating the young. “The internet is a huge unrestricted playground, with young media consumers falling prey to the numerous dangers online. It is therefore crucial to equip young minds with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital landscape safely,” she remarked.

The media symposium covered several relevant topics including trolls, artificial intelligence, cancel culture, doom scrolling, grooming, hate speech, and online scams. Each topic was introduced by Selena King, Caitlyn Sy, Sharliz Siy, Niccolo Sy, Raine Kho, Daniel Lim, and Andrew Liu, respectively.

Following the symposium was a Q&A session where En Duo Wang, Brianna See, Hans Tan, Lucas Tan, Andre Aw, Joshua Yap, and Gianna Asuncion took the panel for the various topics.

“As the audience primarily consisted of 4th graders, I tried my best to explain the sensitive issue in the least complicated manner,” commented Gianna Asuncion, the panelist for the topic of grooming.

“The media symposium was an eye-opener for most of our Grade 4 students as it made them realize not only the benefits of technology but the danger that comes with it,” said Alan Co, Gethsemane B's homeroom teacher.

"The Digital Safety Symposium is important. It helps Grade 4 students learn how to use the internet responsibly. In today's world, it's crucial for fourth graders to understand digital safety. This knowledge helps them interact online in a safe and respectful way, creating a good foundation for their future online activities," said Grade 4 Level Coordinator Liberty Landicho.
