New Lifers Bring Home the Bacon in Journalism Competition

Campus journalists of MGC New Life Christian Academy proved their mettle as they bagged 12 medals during the 22nd Word Cup and Seventh Masterclass journalism competition held last August 24 to 25 at Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel.

Lifenews Editor-in-Chief Annika Chong of Zion B bagged gold in Senior High School (SHS) News Writing as well as bronze in SHS Copyreading and Headline Writing. Features Editor Jazelle Lim from Olive A took home a silver medal in SHS Features Writing, along with an honorable mention in SHS Copyreading and Headline Writing.

Photojournalist Harrod Sze of Patmos A earned three medals, winning two silver medals in Junior High School (JHS) Photojournalism for his photos in the press conference and the Pamulaklakin trail, and a bronze medal in JHS Mobile Journalism for his video. Science Editor Nathan Hao from Zion B earned a silver medal in SHS Science Writing, while Science staffer Magnus Cabilangan bagged bronze in the same category. Meanwhile, Sports staffer Anya Chong from Berea C and Managing Editor Jana Dy from Zion A earned honorable mentions in the JHS Sports and SHS Editorial Writing categories, respectively.

Apart from the students' success, JHS faculty members and Lifenews advisers Archie Jerome Maramag and Lucille Cui also received the bronze Ambassador Award as a token of appreciation for accompanying the students. The school also received an Institutional Ambassador Award for having joined Word Cup’s last four journalism competitions.

“I am happy that the students got to experience joining this competition and display their God-given talents,” expressed Cui. 

The Word Cup is an annual writing competition and masterclass held at different venues in the country to help aspiring campus journalists grow and improve their craft.
