A Peek into Senior High School
Junior High School B (JHB) students and their parents attended the Senior High School (SHS) Program Orientation last January 12 at the MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) auditorium in preparation for their mandatory SHS strand selection.
Held from 8:00 am to 10:30 am, SHS Supervisor Rose Pagnamitan kickstarted the program with an introduction to the SHS curriculum, in hopes of easing the decision-making process.
The respective strand coordinators, along with some alumni, then gave a glimpse of what to expect from each strand. Currently, MGCNLCA’s SHS curriculum only offers the academic track, which has four strands: Accounting and Business Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and General Academic Strand (GAS), and Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM).
ABM Strand Coordinator Richelle Kho introduced ABM’s teachers and program, which involves researching industries and markets, solving for profitability, and forming a business. Kho also discussed the ABM flowchart, stressing the importance of passing the prerequisite subjects to graduate on time.
For the GAS and HUMSS strand orientations, HUMSS Strand Coordinator Kenno Caballero focused on the exposure across different strands that GAS provides for students who are undecided. He also spotlighted the HUMSS strand’s holistic learning experience and the opportunity to pursue a liberal and social science-related education in college.
The STEM orientation was facilitated last by STEM Strand Coordinator Neshie Guntiñas, who featured its capstone research and immersive experiences in STEM-related careers.
The SHS Department also invited some alumni to share their experiences in the different strands.
Amber Yaokasin, who graduated cum laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman, shared how the HUMSS strand allowed her to explore the different opportunities available outside of school, as well as gave her eye-opening experience that helped in her business journey.
Alumna Alyana Zoie Chua talked about her ABM experience and how the training that MGCNLCA provided her has been a big help during college and in the workplace. Chua graduated magna cum laude from the Ateneo de Manila University and is in her second year working at Shopee as a management trainee,
Meanwhile, Chua’s brother Shawn Darren, also a former New Lifer, discussed his SHS STEM experience during the pandemic. Now a second year student at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the younger Chua vouched for the flexibility the strand gave him in pursuing his college courses in Data Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science.
The Chua siblings’ father Benjamin was also invited to share about his experience as a former school parent. He encouraged the students to become God-fearing Christian leaders, unlocking their full potential as future SHS students.
