MGCNLCA Teachers Prepare to Implement MATATAG Curriculum

In light of the implementation of the new K-10 MATATAG Curriculum this school year, MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) teachers went through a whole-day seminar last July 19 to understand the curriculum and ensure that they are equipped with the proper tools to provide a holistic educational experience for students.

Launched in August 2023 by the Department of Education (DepEd), the curriculum aims to improve the quality of education in the Philippines by promoting a “decongested” learning environment. Following the DepEd’s first phase of implementation, MGCNLCA is set to enact the curriculum in Kindergarten and Grades 1, 4, and 7 this school year.

To assist the teachers in the adjustment to the new curriculum, Pastor Samuel Sumaoang, an academic consultant for a number of Christian schools and a positive psychologist specialist, talked about the curriculum’s implication in Christian schools. Throughout the seminar, Sumaoang highlighted changes brought by the new curriculum, such as the reduction of learning competencies and the decongestion of the curriculum.

Moreover, Sumaoang mentioned that a challenge schools may face is the possible inclusion of LGBTQ topics. To address this, the pastor remarked, “As we move forward in implementing the MATATAG Curriculum, we really have to be resilient. We have to make sure that we are really rooted in the word of God as godly educators.”

The latter part of the seminar dealt with activities enhancing positive discipline where selected teachers role-played different scenarios requiring conflict resolution and restorative dialogue.

In conclusion, Sumaoang also reminded teachers of their role to be a shining light to students. “As you implement the MATATAG Curriculum and as you choose to have positive discipline implemented well in MGCNLCA, let everyone flourish,” he concluded.
