Two MGCNLCA Students Win Scholarships to Study in Singapore

New Lifers Chloe Grace Ang and Evan Tyler Sy were awarded full scholarships to complete high school in Singapore, joining other New Lifers currently studying there.

Ang and Sy both applied for the annual ASEAN Scholarships offered by the Ministry of Education in Singapore sometime between February and May 2023.

“I decided to apply because I actually just wanted to try the test to see how well I fared against Singapore’s standards - I didn’t think I’d get this far. I wanted to at least try it out to open more doors for myself and look for more opportunities,” current grade 10 student Ang shared.

Ang and Sy submitted their initial applications and then were invited to take a qualification exam at Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) on June 18, along with roughly sixty other participants. The exam lasted a total of five hours, covering the subjects of Mathematics and English as well as an essay.

After progressing past those stages, both New Lifers attended the virtual orientation briefing regarding expectations in Singapore. They then underwent an interview at a later date, also held at SISC.

Both passed and were given full scholarships to study at the National Junior College until 12th grade. Ang and Sy will fly out to Singapore on November 7 and will participate in a bridging program before the school year starts in January 2024, when they will begin anew as 9th grade students.

“I never expected to be given the scholarship, but I'm very excited to be going,” grade 9 student Sy expressed. “I'll miss everyone at MGCNL very much, and I'll take every opportunity I can to stay in touch.”

Ang added, “I feel mostly excited about this but a little scared too because it’ll be difficult. I’ll in a sense be alone, but I know that I’ll grow from this experience too, not just academically but also as a person.”

The scholarship benefits include allowances, school fees until 12th grade, provisions for a dormitory, medical insurance benefits, and one plane ticket back to the Philippines, among others.

Ang and Sy are the second set of students to receive scholarships to study in Singapore. The first New Lifer to achieve this feat was Stacey Ngo from Batch 19, having moved to Singapore in December 2019, after qualifying for the ASEAN Scholarships for the Philippines.
