Professional Development Workshop: Bridging Home and School Using the Inquiry Cycle

In an effort to develop a deeper understanding of how to support their children in an inquiry-driven learning environment, MGC New Life Christian Academy’s (MGCNLCA) parents attended the Professional Development Workshop held in the auditorium last November 14.

IB educator Juan Banal led the session with a focus on the inquiry cycle—a cyclical approach to learning that taps into the natural curiosity of the children when investigating topics of interest or seeking answers. He emphasized the importance of learning concepts based on inquiry and the application of learning, as learners themselves are allowed to think, make mistakes, and reflect.

Furthermore, too foster inquiry at home, Banal encouraged parents to ask questions pertaining to the concepts their children explore in school, support their children as they explore their interests, and become co-learners alongside them.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the partnership between home and school by involving parents in the inquiry process, creating a holistic approach to education. This aligns with MGCNLCA’s mission to train children to become God-fearing and socially responsible young adults who are equipped to make positive contributions to their communities.

As part of the inquiry cycle, students are pushed to take action that reflects their learning and growth, whether through solving problems or positive impacts in their community.

Parent Emily Wong remarked, “This system doesn't limit the learners to just learn certain things, but it goes beyond by letting the learners explore their interests (and) capabilities, and eventually know more than what is just being taught in textbooks.”
