Grade School Students Excel in Tagisan ng Mathitinik Math Competition
New Lifers made the school proud and garnered recognition in the Tagisan ng Mathitinik Math Competition held last February 28 at the Philippine Science High School’s (PSHS) main campus.
MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) sent two teams of three students each from the Upper Primary levels to the competition. The first team comprised Tyler Gavin Uy, Pierce Victor Takai, Nathan Gohoc, and Liam Reign Chuco, while the second team was composed of Michiko Meredith Tiong, Brielle Dominique Ong, Raiden Kenzo Cabilangan, and Caleb Zachary Tiu.
The competition began with an individual elimination round, where participants answered a 45-question written exam in two hours. Gohoc finished fourth place with 42 points, while Takai garnered tenth place with 29 points.
Fifteen teams with the highest cumulative scores from the elimination round then proceeded to the semi-finals. Both MGCNLCA teams progressed and experienced a relay-style problem-solving round. Team members split up to answer questions in sets of grouped questions within an allocated time, with each question’s answer leading to the next.
The two teams placed fifth and sixth, securing their slots in the finals. Teams worked together to solve questions and gain points for the last round of the contest. Out of nine teams, the team of Uy, Takai, and Gohoc topped the finals round and snatched first place.
“During the competition, I was very nervous because of how competitive everyone on stage was. After, though, I was shocked and also very happy with my result,” shared Takai. “Near the end [of the finals round], they announced that we were actually [second], so when they announced our win, it was a shock to my whole team.”
Overall scores were computed using the results of the three rounds. The Immaculate Conception Academy team won first place, followed by San Pablo Central School and Jubilee Christian School, for second and third place respectively.
Tagisan ng Mathitinik is an annual math competition open to Grade 4 to 6 students hosted and organized by PSHS. Kaiser Travis Chan, a former New Lifer and current PSHS student, mentioned that this year’s competition was among the hardest in its history.
