New Lifers Swing into Action at the JGFP Inter-School Golf Tournament

The MGC New Life Christian Academy golf team is finally putting into action!

The MGC New Life Christian Academy’s golf team was launched when they participated in the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP) Inter-School Golf Tournament last September. The Middle School division teed off first on September 14, 2024, at Club Intramuros, followed by the Senior High School (SHS) division on September 15 at Summit Point Golf and Country Club. Finally, the Junior High School division showcased its skills on September 21, at Sherwood Hills Golf Club.

Plans to establish a golf varsity team have been in the works for years, but it was only this year that those plans finally came to fruition. While the team is not recognized as an official varsity at the moment, New Lifers have been given the opportunity to compete and proudly represent the school in certain tournaments.

“I’m really excited for the school to have a golf team and I hope it can be a way for MGCNL golfers to bond and grow the sport,” said Bryce Co. “I think it’s awesome that the school finally has a golf team after all this time. It’s a great chance for students to show their talent and be part of something new.”

The SHS team, composed of Grade 10 students Santi Asuncion, Arron Lim, and Marc Cinco, along with Grade 11 students Bryce Co and Kenzo Chua, collectively secured 6th place in the school rankings. In the JHS division, Grade 8 participants Sophia Liao and Sean Go placed 11th overall. The Middle School participants included Grade 5 students Sebastian Bayle, Yul Kwon, Olivia Chan, and William Gatchalian, along with Grade 6 students Enzo Jacob Ke and Clarence Alviar, who finished in 12th place.

Reflecting on the experience from the tournament, Asuncion shared, “I felt at first that it was a bit pressuring because it was for the school, but the pressure disappeared because I realized I wasn’t alone and had a team to play with. I’ve always wanted to join school tournaments, so it was very exciting for me.”

A grand parade of teams was held at the Makati Coliseum last October 19 as the JGFP Inter-School Golf Tournament gathered over 500 young golfers from 40 different schools. Aside from the competitive nature of the event, the tournament is also a celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie, offering junior golfers a chance to showcase their skills and build inter-school friendships.

The National Finals will take place on March 8 to 9, 2025, at Summit Point and Mt. Malarayat, where the top three teams and individual players will advance. Teams from Visayas and Mindanao will also be represented by one team and player per bracket, extending the tournament’s reach.

This tournament serves as a significant milestone for the New Lifers, marking the school's first official participation with unwavering support backing them. The team’s debut is a sign of many more achievements as they continue to make their mark in the world of junior golf.
