A Cake-Filled Christmas by Berea Students

In the spirit of Christmas, Berea students competed in a bake-off and prepared Christmas-themed cakes on December 13 and 18, 2023. This activity aimed to enhance students' baking skills as part of the Home Economics (HE) class.

The cakes were evaluated based on a 70-point criteria, which included factors such as preparation, ingredients, baking time, food safety, festiveness of the theme, flavor and taste, and overall appearance.

Clinching first place with an impressive score of 65 points is Group 6 of Berea D, composed of Samara Ang, Maike Sih, Seidi Sy, and Lucy Wang, for their “Trio of Christmas Tree Cakes.”

With 62.5 points, Groups 3 and 4 of Berea B tied in second place with their “Christmas Tree Cake” and a “Classic Winter Wonderland Cake,” respectively. The former group was composed of Anya Caga, Anne Paw, and Justine Tan, while the latter consisted of Jade Oritga, Josiah Techico, and Maribeth Jullian Tiong.

Coming in close at third, Group 1 of Berea B scored 62 points with their “Snowman Deconstructed Chiffon Cake” created by Abigail Albano, Josef Co, Blake Go, and Arwin Lim.

HE teacher Daniel Matthew Espaldon emphasized the importance of honing skills to honor God.  “These skills are given to all of us so that we can enhance them to showcase more of the glory of the Lord. I pray that [the students] will not just forget what they learned from the subject,” remarked Espaldon.

Second-place winner Tiong shared about learning the importance of familiarizing oneself with the recipe from the activity. Third placer Albano remarked that she learned how to search for recipes, decide on recipe combinations, and plate desserts.

The cakes were judged by Espaldon, Junior High School A Supervisor Karen Fulgencio, HE Subject Leader and Student Affairs Welfare Head Rhenee Sy, and Grade 7 and Grade 8 Writing Lab teacher Bhetanny Go.

“One of my favorite subjects from the start has been HE because I believe that the different recipes we learn there teach us important life lessons that we will carry with us even beyond the classroom,” mentioned Go.
