IB PYP Students Learn Beyond the Classroom in Field Trips

Galilee and Cana students of MGC New Life Christian Academy (MGCNLCA) had educational tours off campus to deepen their insights and learning experiences last October 3 and 10, respectively.

The educational tours helped learners explore and answer the essential questions of their units of inquiry in alignment with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP)’s curriculum, allowing them to further exercise and gain personal knowledge on their school lessons. The Grade 5 students visited the Manila Zoo, the National Museum of Natural History, and Manila Ocean Park, while the Grade 1 students went to Intramuros.

With the transdisciplinary theme “Sharing the Planet,” the Galilee learners explored the diversity and interdependence of living and nonliving things and how they sustain thriving ecosystems.  The students were able to appreciate the biodiversity of the Philippines and acquire information about the marine world by observing animals living in their various ecosystems.

Grade 5 Level Coordinator Charity Sabe shared, “During the educational tour, the learners were mostly engaged in reading, observing, and taking notes about what they learned, which allowed me to also ask other co-level tandem teachers regarding learners' insights under their class.”

Meanwhile, the Cana students’ unit of inquiry focused on discovering and expressing ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values, with the central idea being people’s identities and how they are expressed through their houses. The students were accompanied by a tour guide who walked them through houses in Intramuros.

Since its implementation in MGCNLCA in 2021, the IB PYP has paved the way for MGCNLCA students to engage and immerse themselves in various field trips that provide insights into how their lessons can be applied outside the classroom and give a deeper understanding of the world around them.
