New Lifers Claim Victory in SIMOC and WMI Math Competitions
Four New Lifers bagged several awards in the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) 2024 in Singapore last July 20 to 24, and the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held on July 12 to 16.
Incoming Grade 5 student Nathan Gohoc was deemed the Overall Champion for Grade 4 in SIMOC and was also awarded gold in all three rounds of the competition.
The SIMOC competition consists of three parts: one individual round and two team rounds. The individual round is the Math Olympiad, which is a written exam of 25 questions spanning 90 minutes. Meanwhile, the two team rounds are known as Math Warriors, a math dice game, and Mind Sports, a round composed of various puzzle challenges.
Alongside Gohoc, his batchmates Liam Reign Chuco and Yul Kwon completed the competition with medals as well. Chuco earned gold in Math Olympiad and silver in Math Warriors and Mind Sports, while Kwon garnered bronze in Mind Sports. Meanwhile, incoming Patmos student Aaron Russel Kho was also able to take home a bronze medal from the Math Olympiad.
SIMOC was first held in 2015 with a total of 13 participating countries. The competition has been held annually since then, with thousands of students from over 30 countries participating in this year’s SIMOC.
A week earlier, Kwon also won bronze in his participation in the Final Round of the WMI. Founded in Taiwan in 2013, over 30,000 students from over 30 countries took part in the WMI. A preliminary round was held from January to March. Only those who won awards in this round were given the chance to move on to the finals.
